The (EN) ISO 14119 standard applies to interlock system designers (e.g. machine builders, integrators) as well as the interlock device manufacturers. It is important to note that this applies to the design of new machines. Existing installations are not necessarily affected; however there are some requirements relating to maintenance, function testing, and replacement of components.
The new standard provides clarification of many existing "grey areas" and also acknowledges the use of contemporary technology in the design of interlocking switches. The downloadable paper below is intended to summarize the changes from the previous edition.
So how will (EN) ISO 14119 affect you?

Revere Electric and Rockwell Automation are pleased to announce the launch of the Allen-Bradley® GuardShield™ 450L-B Safety Light Curtain system. This system is PLe/ CAT 4 / SIL 3 safety rated and utilizes an exciting new technology that makes stocking, interchangeability, and versatility a breeze.
Unlike traditional safety light curtains, which are based on separate transmitter and receiver units, this next generation light curtain system features a patented technology which allows each transceiver to be used as a transmitter or receiver via an innovative plug-in module. The functionality of a pair of 450L-B safety light curtains can be selected by inserting a plug-in module into the bottom of each transceiver. Once powered up, the transceiver learns its functionality from the plug-in module and begins operating as a transmitter or receiver. This advanced technology greatly reduces stock and provides a flexible, cost-effective safety solution.
The 450L-B light curtain system offers a compact design, flexible mounting, multiple plug-in options, and alignment laser and bracket accessories.

Intrinsic Safety Modules connect intrinsically safe rated equipment - such as transmitters, solenoids, proximity sensors and encapsulated assemblies- with control systems. An intrinsic safety approach can be more cost-effective than other hazardous location protection/ mitigation strategies in Class l, Division 1 (Zones 0 and 1) locations.
Intrinsic safety circuits are designed to operate at low enough energy levels that igniting hazardous materials will be averted--even in the event of a fault condition, such as a short circuit. Intrinsic safety circuits do not require expensive inert gas purging/pressurization or "explosion-proof"/containment strategies for hazardous locations.
